Music Monday: PE Island

For something a little different, on this Music Monday I thought I'd share an 8tracks playlist I made a few weeks ago featuring tunes from my favourite PEI artists. I'm a fan of every singer and band on this list, and in true typical Island fashion, I actually know or have some connection to most of them, from fellow former Rotary Exchange students to fellow Bluefield High alum, to next-door neighbours and then some. Although there is quite a mix of genres, if you're anything like me hopefully you'll enjoy a mix of  everything from folk to indie rock, and discover a few new favourites along the way!

P.S. If you're on 8tracks let me know in the comments! I'd love to follow along. I'm always on the hunt for new music and would love your recommendations if you have them!

At New London Joy

A few weeks back while driving through picturesque New London, PEI with my dear mama, we happened upon a new (to us at least!) little shop called New London Joy. We stopped in and found a treasure trove of pretty porcelain dishes, antique furniture, vintage jewelry, as well as some beautiful glass tile mosaics.

As we chatted with the friendly folk staffing the shop, we found that there were workshops throughout the summer with owner and artist behind the mosaics, Roseann Barry. The last time I'd made a mosaic was in high school art class, but I really enjoyed it at then, and the possibility of re-learning the medium appealed to me, so I decided to signed up for one of the two day workshops.

On Thursday morning I headed to New London to get started on the first day of the workshop, and was joined by my fellow students - a pair of sisters from Calgary, and a lovely couple from Maine who had the most fantastic accents! I discovered to my delight that all four others frequently summered on PEI - I am always so happy when people from away love my island as much as I do! It also helped that everyone was so friendly, making for enjoyable conversation and laughter as we worked.

Roseann introduced herself and set us loose in her treasure trove of shimmering glass in every possible colour and texture. All five of us eagerly set about choosing the perfect pieces, and I personally gravitated towards shades of blue and teal, being initially inspired by tumbled pieces of an old broken plate (the patterned white and blue pieces above). Following a lesson in cutting our glass into different shapes, I sat down with the group in the summer sunshine to arrange and glue my pretty pieces of glass into the perfect pattern.

Throughout the afternoon we were visited by almost everyone who stopped in to the shop, as we were outside at a picnic table. Roseann patiently guided us and reassured us all in our attempts at creativity and by the end of the day, we all had boards filled with glass, ready to fill in with grout the following day.

On Friday I headed back out, eager to see how my mosaic would look after being filled in with grout, cleaned up, and polished to a shine. We chose complimentary colours of grout that would best suit the colour palettes of our individual pieces. After mixing them to the perfect shades (I went with a mix of blue and green), got to work filling in the empty spaces.

It was so fun to watch not only my own piece come together over the two days, but also to see all of the others too. Everyone had come up with such different mosaic ideas, but they all ended up turning out so well - which was so satisfying! After cleaning off the grout, painting some touchups on the back and sides of our boards, and preparing them to hang, we all excitedly got together for a group photo with our completed work.

This last photo is of my finished piece - grouted, polished, and ready to go! I'm really happy with how it turned out, but now my dilemma is where to hang it! But I'm sure I'll find a spot eventually.

If you're an islander, or will be visiting PEI this summer, have a peek at the New London Joy site, and check out the times and dates for the other workshops happening. Not only is it a seriously enjoyable experience you come away from with a ready-to-hang piece of original art, but all proceeds from the course fees go to an incredibly worthy cause - the PEI Mental Health Association's Teen Suicide Prevention program. Absolutely worth every penny! If any of you actually do end up participating, please send me a photo of your finished piece - I'd love to see!

Do You Believe?

London 2012 - Team Canada
Camera: Hudson Bay Company (HBC) Bikini: HBC Pennant: Roots Bracelet: O My Heart
Kitbag: Roots Striped Tee: Joe Fresh Shoes: Aldo Jacket: HBC Shorts: Joe Fresh Polish: Essie

Today marks the opening of the London 2012 Summer Olympics and since they are the only sporting events that I ever actually make a point of watching (Equestrian, Gymnastics and Swimming are especial favourites of mine), I thought I'd put together a look inspired by the 2012 Games and of course, Team Canada.

You can't have a patriotic look without our country's colours - red and white, so I had to include a cute striped top and white shorts from Joe Fresh. But in addition to our core colours, I don't know that there is anything more iconically Canadian than the Hudson Bay Company stripes. They are actually the official outfitters for the Canadian team - no surprise there - and my favourite Team Canada item was the great patch-emblazoned jean jacket. But due to my love affair with the HBC stripes those are by far my favourite pieces. My must-have picks? A summery swimsuit and a camera to catch all the action. Not to mention a cozy striped sweater.

Last but not least? Some medal-inspired polishes in the requisite gold, silver and bronze. All fabulous colours, but I am definitely hoping to see gold most of all in the coming weeks - for Canada that is!

Are you excited for the Olympic games? Who are you cheering for?

Fading Light

Sailboat Print Top: Forever 21 Necklace: Smart Set Skinny Jeans: Old Navy
As the light faded this evening, I thought I would try my hand for the second time at a self-timed outfit post. I headed out to the backyard to set up my tripod and was immediately swarmed by an extremely determined group of mosquitoes - although I did manage to snap a few photos before being completely eaten alive.

I haven't been dressing up much, as most of my time has been spent chasing around nieces and nephews on the beach in casual shorts and tanks. Today though, I had a few errands to run around town so I put together my staple black jeans and a comfortable sailboat printed top. As I write, I think the local marina might have been a better spot to shoot this particular item, but I guess I'll just have to remix it sometime soon and wear it in its more ideal nautical setting.

We're in for a beautiful weekend here on PEI, and I can't wait to go to the beach, as well as spend some more time honing my photography skills by snapping some pictures of my favourite scenic spots around my island.

Above & Beyond

Knowing my love of, well, pretty much anything with a literary theme, as soon as I saw this adorably bookish stylebook on Modcloth I knew I had to share it. A book-themed photo-shoot featuring librarian-chic looks? How could I not?

Although normally I am a fan of bright jewel tones, this summer I can't get enough of soft, gentle colours. I know mint has been everywhere this spring and summer, but I am really drawn to a whole range of pastel hues, not unlike the muted tones of the sea-glass I so enjoy collecting along the shores of my gentle island, in true beachcomber fashion.

I've put together a few pretty pastel pieces that I am loving for summer. My favourite? That fantastic sand dollar ring, which I will officially be saving my pennies for. A must-have for my growing collection of ocean-inspired baubles.

What shades are inspiring your style choices this summer?

Floral

These pretty floral earrings from Lepun are quite possibly my new favourite accessory, I've been wearing them everywhere. Once Masha (the lovely seller behind the shop) gets back from vacation, I look very much forward to filling my jewelry box with many more pretty Lepun baubles.

Beach Babes

This morning my sister and I brought her sweet little babes to Chelton Provincial park for a beach day, to play on the sandbars and in the shallow water at low tide. As much as I love the white squeaking sand and the dunes of the north shore of PEI, I also love the warmer water and stretches of sandbars on the south shore beaches. They're better for collecting sea-glass too!

My energetic and hilarious nephew James was sporting a striped hat and spent his morning racing around sandbars, driving his toy cars through the sand, digging holes and building sand castles with his dear Mama.

This was my niece Susannah's second ever visit to the beach, and although last time she wasn't too sure she liked the sand, this time she was all about splashing in the pools between the sandbars, and chasing after oblivious seagulls. Might I also point out the adorability of a perfect sun hat and ruffled swimsuit on this sweet little lass? I might be a biased aunt, but I think she is lovely, and a style icon in the making

One thing I love about this particular beach is that it's a lesser known spot - meaning fewer people and the sense of almost having the shoreline all to yourself. It's also unique because it is one of the few swimming spots where you can see the Confederation Bridge off in the distance. Pretty awesome.

We finished off the morning with a visit to the village shop for a freezie shared by the boy and I = yum. Nothing like spending the morning at the beach, and heading home with the breeze blowing through the windows, snacking on a frozen treat to make for a wonderful summer day. Perfect!

Music Monday: Loon Choir

I am so excited to share today's tune with you. It all started when I was working in Ottawa, and one of my wonderful co-workers  Kathleen told me about a band she had just joined as violinist, subsequently inviting me to attend a show. Now, when friends introduce me to new music (and especially bands they are actually in!) I often feel I have to tread carefully, on the off chance that I don't like it but still have to try to be diplomatic enough not to offend their musical sensibilities after the fact.

Bearing this in mind, I went with a couple of friends (Hi Jill & Norm!) to show support by checking out Loon Choir's performance and guess what? We had a seriously fantastic time! The members of Loon Choir certainly know how to put on a great live show - the three of us went from standing awkwardly with the rest of the quiet crowd to dancing up a storm as soon as Loon Choir started playing some of their fabulous tunes.  Fortunately for me, I was able to tell Kathleen the next day how thoroughly and enthusiastically all three of us enjoyed their performance.

Self-described as indie-rock/art-pop, I can attest that as a 7 piece band (with everything from synth to violin) Loon Choir definitely has a unique and eclectic sound, with catchy melodies and poetic lyrics. Pretty much everything I could ask for, and absolutely worth a listen. Luckily they've just released a new album, Fire Poems (Get it here), and have been playing shows all over Ontario to promote it, including a performance at Ottawa's Bluesfest. My hope? That they'll be hitting up the east coast, and soon! It's been far too long since I've attended one of their shows, and I can't wait to hear the songs from the new album live.

If you're looking for something fresh, unique and seriously special, give Loon Choir a listen. You won't be disappointed, I promise!

Sunday Snaps v. 4

Since I've snapped many a photo over the last couple of weeks, I thought I'd better share another edition of Sunday Snaps with you all. To start, a clematis happily growing in our garden, a case full of pretty vintage jewelry and brooches at Joy - a sweet little shop in New London, and polka-dotted Joe Fresh t-shirts (I want to collect them all!).

Next, my sister Rose gives my sweet niece a kiss during her first trip to the beach - which was a definite success! A misty morning look at our marshy back yard at high tide, and a striped Smart Set skirt that I tried on and eventually hope to go back for!

Finally, an absolutely beautiful double rainbow (my photo doesn't do it justice at all) that gave my heart a major lift - so lovely! A trip to the Summerside waterfront with my lovely Mama and a pretty rose plucked for me by my dear dad.  All three a lovely ending to a long couple of weeks.

Hope you've all had a lovely weekend!

La Petite Sirène

This editorial from Haute Living magazine styled by Jilian Sanz and shot by Danny Christensen is one of my recent favourites, and was an immediate addition to my ever-growing inspiration folder as soon as I saw it.

I seem to gravitate towards water inspired shoots and this is no exception. There is just something so lovely about a glamourous look juxtaposed with the simple beauty of the beach and waves, especially - as in this editorial - where the colours in the garments echo the natural colours of the ocean. My favourite shot? The amazing seafoam dress. Absolutely perfect.

Canada Day

Canada Day

Canada Day has always been one of my favourite holidays, even if our celebrations mainly consist of simple things - days at the beach with my family, strawberry shortcake, traipsing down to the waterfront to watch the fireworks fly high above the water.

I spent my last Canada Day celebrating on Parliament Hill with Will, Kate, and thousands of others, and as fun as that was, I am admittedly glad to be back to the quiet, but happy pace of Prince Edward Island. Immediately following this post? I will be heading to the cottage and the seahore to spend the day with my family on this beautiful summer day, and that's just the way I like it.

Happy Canada Day Everyone!
